Today was Mehmed’s birthday; he turned seven. Mashallah, rather than giving him a chance to just think, Me, me, me, my birthday, Baba took him to the homeless shelter to hand out cupcakes and chocolate. Then they made loads of pizza together and we took him with his friends to the waterfall for a picnic. He had a good day but he fell apart after we got home. He yelled at Baba when he told him to put his bike away. When Baba took his arm and held him close and reminded him about his manners, he burst into tears and cried for almost 15 minutes. Baba just held onto him the whole time and finally Mehmed said, “Why did Allah have to take my mother? Every kid I know has a mama, why did He have to take mine?” Baba told him they would go back to the waterfall in the moonlight and pray the prayer of Need so that Allah would make him feel better.

Can you imagine how awful it would have been if I had been stuck away at camp and had missed Mehmed’s birthday? And especially the moonlight trip to the waterfall? I shudder to think about it.

The waterfall was magical, Buraq. The moon was so bright and the waterfall looked like molten silver. We prayed the night prayer, and then we all prayed the prayer of Need together. We even went in the pool. When we were driving home Mehmed fell asleep on my lap and everything seemed so much easier. But I still feel such an ache in my heart that I can’t tell Mama these things. Do you think she knows anyway, Buraq?
